How to read and press a shortcut
A shortcut is a combination of keys that makes the client perform an action, such as taking a screenshot, recording audio or showing a window. This page covers the default shortcuts for the desktop client.
- Use Ctrl on Windows and Command (⌘) on Mac. The
commandlabel on a Mac keyboard, the abbreviationCmdand the⌘symbol all refer to the same key, usually beside the space bar. - The plus sign means a combination; do not press the plus key. For
Ctrl + H, hold Ctrl, tap H, then release both keys. Use the same method for⌘ + Hon Mac. Keep the modifier held while pressing H; do not type the shortcut's name into a text field. - Capital letters are just labels. Press the H key without turning on Caps Lock or adding Shift.
- Enter is the return key. A Mac keyboard may label it
returnor↩. The,and.shortcuts use the comma and period keys respectively.
Yellow markers in tutorial images advance the tutorial. To operate the actual client, press the combination on your computer keyboard.
First practice: hide the window and bring it back
- Open the desktop client on your computer and sign in. Confirm that the floating toolbar is visible.
- Hold Ctrl on Windows or ⌘ on Mac, tap B, then release both keys.
- After the client window disappears, press the same combination again.
- The window reappears: you have completed a shortcut action. This toggles visibility; it does not quit the app.
If nothing happens, confirm that the client is still running. If you customized keys before, open Settings → Advanced Settings → custom shortcuts and check the actual Toggle visibility binding. Use the customization tutorial below if there is a conflict.
Learn these common actions next
Below, “Ctrl / ⌘” means Ctrl on Windows or ⌘ on Mac. Do not press both modifier keys together.
- Screenshot: Ctrl / ⌘ + H. Check that the image appears in the client's capture queue. Area capture also requires dragging a rectangle around the question.
- Solve: Ctrl / ⌘ + Enter. Press this after capturing the question to start generating a solution. Capturing and solving are separate, consecutive actions.
- Start / stop recording: Ctrl / ⌘ + M. Press once to start and again to stop. Stopping clears the current transcript and answer display, so finish reading or save anything you need first. Follow the voice tutorial to configure audio sources and permissions, and confirm incoming transcription.
- Generate an interview answer: Ctrl / ⌘ + G. Press after the question appears in the transcript. Starting recording alone is not a manual answer trigger.
- Voice solve: Ctrl / ⌘ + J. Trigger it after a spoken coding, math or scenario question appears in the transcript. The concise-answer toggle does not affect this action.
- Read the previous / next page: Ctrl / ⌘ + comma / period. In a solution or voice panel that supports paging, comma goes back and period goes forward. This continues reading existing content without submitting a new question.
Once you know how to press the keys, configure the basics, then follow the screenshot walkthrough or voice walkthrough. Look up other keys in the full table when needed; you do not need to memorize them all now.
Default shortcuts (complete list)
Checked against the current client source, with 25 default shortcut actions. Names and order match Settings → Advanced Settings → custom shortcuts: General → Screenshot & processing → Navigation → Window & display. Click Next inside the shortcut section to reach the later groups.
These are the default bindings. If you have customized them, use the combinations shown in your client. The Mac column uses ⌘, which is the same key as Cmd or Command.

Symbol keys: , is comma, . is period, ; is semicolon, ' is apostrophe, [ / ] are square brackets, - is minus, = is equals and 0 is the digit zero. Hold Ctrl / ⌘ and press the corresponding key. None of these defaults requires Shift. If a screenshot shows < / >, default paging still uses comma / period. Zoom in uses equals without Shift.
Why paging keys appear twice: The client has separate settings for Solutions previous / next page and Speech previous / next page. Both default to comma / period, so they are listed separately here. After customizing, verify paging in the relevant panel.
Custom shortcuts
Shortcuts can be customized in "Advanced settings."
Follow the screenshots: open a group → press a new combination → save → test locally.
The walkthrough's ⌘ + Shift + S is an example of changing the screenshot binding. The default remains Ctrl + H on Windows / ⌘ + H on Mac until you change and save it in your client.
Keyboard protection follows newly saved shortcut bindings. After saving a new shortcut, follow the keyboard protection guide to check your left/right modifier settings. Then use Keyboard events to inspect the keys received by the page and confirm the client performs the intended action.
